A draft is saved work that you are still reviewing. A published version is the content visitors can see. On an already published page, you can keep a new draft while the previous version stays live.

## Understand the status

| Status or control | What it does | Tip |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Draft** | The page is not published. | Use preview to review it privately. |
| **Published** | The saved published page is available to visitors. | Check its ordinary website address. |
| **Changed** | A published page has pending draft changes. | Visitors still see the previously published content. |
| **Save Draft** | Saves the working content without publishing it. | Use before leaving the editor or sharing a preview. |
| **Publish changes** | Publishes the working content. | Review the whole page first, including links and images. |
| **Revert to published** | Replaces pending changes with the published content. | Save or note anything you want to keep before reverting. |

The Admin can save drafts automatically while you work. Watch the save information, and use **Save Draft** before leaving. An autosave is not a publish action.

## Save and publish

1. Make your edit and choose **Save Draft**.
2. Use **Live Preview** or **Preview** to review it.
3. Choose **Publish changes** when it is ready.
4. Wait for the save to finish. Check **Published**, then open the ordinary page address and refresh it.

If you don't see publishing controls, your access may not allow publishing. Ask the person responsible for publishing or your agency.

## Unpublish a page

1. Open the three-dot menu beside the save controls.
2. Choose **Unpublish**.
3. Read **Confirm unpublish** and choose **Confirm**.
4. Check that the page is now a draft and no longer opens as an ordinary public page.

Unpublishing keeps the content. **Delete** is a separate action. To make the page public again, open it and choose **Publish changes**.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> Review Header, Footer, and other page links before unpublishing a real page. Those links may still point at its address. Ask your agency about a redirect when the page has moved permanently.

## Compare earlier versions

1. Choose **Versions** near the page name.
2. Find the date and status you need. Open the date to compare that version.
3. Use the comparison selector to choose the version to compare against. **Modified only** hides unchanged fields; turn it off for a fuller view.

| Version label | What it means | Tip |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Current Draft** | The current saved draft. | Compare it with a published version to review pending changes. |
| **Draft** | An earlier draft save. | Useful for finding work from before a recent edit. |
| **Autosave Draft** | A draft saved automatically while editing. | Check the timestamp carefully. |
| **Previously Published** | Content that was published earlier. | Its status matters when you restore it. |

## Restore a version

1. Open the version and read the comparison.
2. Choose **Restore this version**.
3. Read **Confirm Version Restoration** and choose **Confirm**.
4. Return to the page editor. Check its content and status, then check its ordinary website address.

![The version comparison screen with Modified only and Restore this version](./images/restore.light.webp)

> [!IMPORTANT]
> Restoring a version also restores its saved publishing state. A published version can become public again immediately. Review the version and its status before confirming.

To restore the content privately, open the arrow beside **Restore this version** and choose **Restore as draft**. Confirm the restoration, then check the draft in preview before publishing.

Version history is useful for recovering content, but your agency manages the site's wider backups. Contact them if the version you need is unavailable.

## Check afterwards

Return to the page editor and check its content and status. Then open its public address outside preview mode. Confirm that visitors see the version you intended and that unfinished changes remain a draft.
