Publishing and drafts

Keep unfinished changes private, remove a page from public view, and recover an earlier version.

On this page

You'll practice saving a private change and learn how to recover earlier content. Use your practice page for this part, not a page visitors rely on.

Save a change without publishingLink to this section

  1. Open your practice page and change its hero Title to "A draft heading to review".

  2. Choose Save Draft. On a page that was already published, the status becomes Changed. The saved change is private; visitors still see the last published version.

  3. Use Live Preview to see the draft. Open the ordinary page address in another tab to compare it with the published page. If that tab shows a preview bar, choose Exit preview mode first.

  4. Choose Publish changes when the draft is ready. To discard the pending changes instead, use Revert to published and review any confirmation.

Unpublish your practice pageLink to this section

  1. Open the three-dot menu beside the page's save controls and choose Unpublish.

  2. Read Confirm unpublish, then choose Confirm. The content stays in the Admin as a draft.

  3. Refresh the ordinary page address. It should no longer show a public page. To make it available again, open it in Pages and choose Publish changes.

Unpublishing a page can leave navigation links pointing at an unavailable address. Review Navigation before removing a real page from public view.

Look at earlier versionsLink to this section

  1. Choose Versions near the page name. The list labels saved drafts, autosaves, and published versions.

  2. Open a version by its date. Compare the changes. Turn off Modified only if you want to see unchanged fields too.

  3. Choose Restore this version, read Confirm Version Restoration, and choose Confirm only when you want to restore that content.

To review an older version privately first, open the arrow beside Restore this version and choose Restore as draft. Confirm, then preview the draft before publishing.

Check afterwardsLink to this section

You should know which version visitors see and which changes remain private. After any restore, inspect the content and status before making further edits.
